I started working when I was nine years old. In the beginning, I hassled my mum a lot to let me work because she never wanted us to but I couldn’t not work in the situation we were in. My father was unemployed and we didn’t have anyone to bring anything home because he couldn’t manage to find anything to tide us over. I found out about some work from some friends that I had – I had some much older friends and they told me about it. I hassled my mother to take me there – so she always took me there and picked me up - and I worked.
Eu comencei a trabalhar com nove anos de idade. De imediato assim eu fiquei enchendo as paciências da minha mãe, que ela nunca quis que a gente trabalhasse, mas também não dava pra eu ficar sem trabalhar na situação em que estava: meu pai estava desempregado, não tinha nem como ninguém colocar nada dentro de casa, ele também não conseguia bico.Aí eu fiquei sabendo do serviço através de uns amigos que eu tinha, muito mais velho do que eu. Eles falaram do trabalho, eu fiquei enchendo as paciências da minha mãe pra ela me levar, e ela sempre me levava e me buscava e eu fiquei trabalhando lá .
I worked first of all in a warehouse making lipstick. Later I worked in another factory making jewellery. Then I went to work in a house for a family – but I only worked there when the woman wanted me. So I left and went back to work making jewellery but I didn’t want to stay because it was only 4 cents for a thousand pieces and so it was really bad. I quit and managed to get work in another house with a family in Taboao. I went to work there for seven or eight months but when I couldn’t afford to pay the bus fares the woman fired me.
Eu trabalhei primeiro num galpão com montagem de batom, depois eu trabalhei em um outro com montagem de bijuteria ai eu fui trabalhar em casa de família né, que é assim: a gente vai lá quando a mulher pede. Depois que eu sai, eu voltei a trabalhar com montagem de bijuteria que eu não quis ficar porque era mil peças por quatro centavos, então pra mim era muito ruim. Depois eu parei e consegui o emprego nesta casa de família lá no Taboão, ai fui pra lá trabalhei uns sete, oito meses depois eu não tive como pagar a condução e a mulher me demitiu.
